Outfit Of The Week 7/21/24 – 7/27/24
Another month, another obligatory office appearance.
I’ve been working remotely ever since the pandemic started. At that point, I lived within commuting distance (broadly speaking) of my NYC-based office job. As the months dragged on where the was no end in sight for remote work, my wife and I decided to take the plunge and move our family wherever the hell we wanted to go.
That’s how we ended up in the mountains, on a dirt road off a dirt road, in the middle of the woods.
And I love it! I’ll never go back to being in an office every day! Remote work has not only had an immensely positive impact on my life, but it has also made me better at my job. I can focus much more easily in my home office and I can work longer hours without worrying about missing a train and getting home at all hours of the night.
More than two years into the pandemic, my job started requiring us all to come into the office one day a month, which I don’t think is unreasonable.
Instead of an inconvenience, I view it as an opportunity to dust off some of my more formal-leaning attire that I would otherwise probably not wear as much.
The outfit you see here is my bold foray into wearing a short sleeve shirt under a jacket. Usually, since I am pretty traditional about my clothing choices, if I am wearing a jacket, I need to be wearing a long-sleeve shirt underneath.
This day, however, was predicted to be about 97 degrees in Manhattan. On top of that, my boss had scheduled a little outing for the team, which meant I would be navigating the streets and subways much more than usual.
Clearly, care had to be taken when picking an outfit for the day. I still wanted to wear a jacket, not only because I like to, but because the office can be quite chilly and I also wanted to wear something that wouldn’t cause me to sweat profusely if I needed to remove the jacket, namely, a short sleeve shirt.
What I came up with was this blue-and-white, seersucker shirt underneath a navy blazer (both from Brooks Brothers). I had the blazer on until I sat down on the train on the morning and then just carried it the rest of the day. Oh well.
You’ll notice that if I’m wearing a jacket, I am either wearing a tie or I’m wearing a shirt with a button-down collar. I never wear a regular collar with no tie under a jacket. I hate the way the collar collapses underneath the jacket. This shirt stands up really nicely under my blazer so, with the jacket on, it looks pretty put-together.
The pocket square I chose was an orange and light-blue square from Men’s Wearhouse. This is one of my go-to summer squares and I find it goes really nicely with most of my warm-weather attire.
My pants and shoes shouldn’t surprise you at this point. They were my Lands’ End khakis and my Bass Weejuns.
As always during the summer (when it isn’t raining) my hat was my checked, linen cap from JJ Hat Center.
My watch was my Lorier Zephyr. The strap on this watch has changed color over the course of the five months I’ve owned it, going from a pretty stark orange to this deep brown.
Honestly, I think it’s because I’ve sweat a lot while wearing it. I always say you have to wear your clothes and not baby them!
Thankfully, the weather up in the mountains has been much cooler than my day in the city.
Have a wonderful weekend!
