Outfit Of The Week 4/20/25 – 4/26/25

After four straight weeks of jackets and ties, our “OOTW” series returns with something decidedly casual.

Earlier this week, I wrote an article about whether or not baseball caps have a place in a man’s wardrobe (they do). In light of that article, I wanted to showcase a “baseball cap outfit” here.

The weather where I live has been gorgeous this week. It’s been in the 60s and sunny every day. In the morning it’s cool enough to have the heat on in the truck while I drive my son to school but by the afternoon, the windows are open!

Even though I love the winter, this mid-spring weather is pretty delightful. It isn’t too hot or cold at any point of the day so you’re just comfortable all the time.

The outfit I chose consists of three noteworthy pieces: My cap, my shirt, and my jeans. Let’s first discuss my baseball cap.

In my article about baseball caps, I said that a cap should ideally be dark, minimalistic, and/or have some sort of personal connection to you. This cap checks all those boxes.

It’s a dark grey, wool-blend cap with an adjustable back. The patch on the front is a strip of dark brown leather advertising a brewery in upstate New York that I really like (which is also in the town where I used to live).

The flannel shirt I chose was a grey shirt my wife bought me for Christmas. It’s from Vermont Flannel Company and I might do a review of this item sometime soon.

This shirt has quickly become one of my favorite flannels (of which I have many). It’s thicker than my Lands’ End Flagship flannels, but not quite as hefty as my Woolrich Oxbow Bend flannels. I would say it’s on par, weight-wise, with L.L. Bean’s chamois shirts. The big benefit of this one over the Bean version is that this one fits WAY better! Bean is notorious for having deranged sizing, which can be frustrating. This Vermont Flannel Company shirt is a large and fits like it.

I decided to wear the shirt tucked into my jeans. Beyond the practical benefits, I have been finding that I like the look of it when I am wearing a hat with no outerwear.

For my jeans, I wore my $30 Dickies. I feel like people get too tied up in knots when it comes to jeans. People shell out heavy money for jeans that they feel are superior to the cheaper alternatives. But are they all that better?

Proponents of raw denim, for example, say that it’s better than regular run-of-the-mill denim because of the way it fades. They’ll say that, over time, the jeans develop a fade pattern that is unique to you.

Um… I hate to break it to those people but ALL denim fades with time, whether it’s $30 or $200.

Take a look at my jeans. I have had them for a couple years. I wear them regularly, but not exclusively.

There is apparent “whiskering” on the front where the pants crease from movement. The knees are getting white, especially the right knee which is the spot I kneel on when I am hugging my boys before sending them to school. It’s obvious in which pockets I carry my knife and wallet.

I don’t need expensive, fancy jeans for that.

My boots were my Carolina loggers that continue to serve me well.

I am not sure how wearing these in the summer is going to go. As I mentioned in my review of them, they are a little roomy on me since I am in-between sizes. Wearing them with thick socks is comfortable, but I am not sure how that’s going to go over when it starts to get really hot. We’ll see soon, I guess.

Anyway, all together, this outfit was a perfect, casual outfit for a beautiful spring day.

Have a wonderful weekend!
