Outfit Of The Week 4/14/24 – 4/20/24

This week’s edition of “OOTW” features another outfit I wore to the office recently.

What made this day special was the weather! Holy moly, was it nice in the city that day! It was relatively cool on my morning commute which meant that even though I was walking quickly, I wasn’t sweating when I got to the office. Later in the afternoon, it warmed up to about 70 degrees with brilliant sunshine.

For my outfit that day, I needed to take the cool morning air into account. That meant a mid-weight, fully-lined, lambswool sport coat. The one you see here is a dark navy and burgundy check from Charles Tyrwhitt. This is the jacket I have actually received the most compliments on, even from random people on the street (in NYC, no less). This jacket is cut a bit differently than some of my other jackets. The shoulders are quite strong and there is ample drape (both of which I like). Even though most people gravitate to the softer tailoring of companies like Suit Supply or Spier and Mackay, I quite like the manly silhouette this jacket provides. I mean, if you’re going to wear a jacket, wear a jacket!

Since this was the first truly temperate day in a while, I eschewed my usual v-neck sweater and just wore a blue Oxford-cloth button-down shirt (Lands’ End Hyde Park).

My pants were my usual khakis from Lands’ End. My shoes were my usual brown derbies from Beckett Simonon.

On the wrist was my new Lorier Zephyr watch. I had swapped out the brown strap for the black strap for a little change of pace and I think it went nicely with the dark sport coat.

My pocket square was one of the first squares I ever bought. It’s a silk square from Brooks Brothers and it goes with pretty much everything I own, considering it’s red and blue.

The nice weather meant no outerwear was necessary, but I always wear a hat. The hat I chose for that day was my dark grey, cashmere and wool cap.

One reason I was interested in this outfit was because I don’t usually wear this sport coat with khaki pants. Given how dark the jacket is, I tend to think of it as a “winter” piece and I tend to pair it with grey trousers. It wasn’t anything I gave too much thought to in the past, I just naturally styled the jacket that way.

This time around, I made the conscious decision to pair it with some lighter pants and wear the jacket on a warm, spring day. The fact that it worked helped me realize how versatile it is!

Also, another important thing about this outfit is how simple and comfortable it was. Now, traditional menswear is comfortable to begin with but this outfit really drives home how easy it is to look put together and feel good at the same time. It doesn’t get much easier than khakis, an OCBD, and a full-cut sport coat. Add some personal touches like a pocket square, a hat, and a watch with some sentimental value and you’ll be better dressed than most men out there.

Have a wonderful weekend!
