Outfit Of The Week 8/4/24 – 8/10/24
It’s early August and I can already feel an autumn chill in the air!
Is it just me? Maybe so. I live in the mountains of the northeast and for the past week it’s been in the mid-70s during the day and dipping down to about 56 degrees at night. It’s been absolutely lovely!
It’s been so nice that I actually built a fire in the fireplace the other night while my wife and I watched a movie!
A warm fire on a chilly summer evening is heavenly, isn’t it?
Today, the boys were playing outside in the rain for a few minutes before bedtime. I stood by the front door and watched them as they splashed around in the murky, driveway puddles. Honest to goodness, I saw my breath as I exhaled!
Suffice to say, I am jazzed about the impending change of seasons and my choice for this week’s “OOTW” reflects that.
The outfit I wore wasn’t anything all that special. I certainly didn’t take more than 2 minutes to pick it out. I was really just hurrying out the door to run some errands. But it represented the first time in months that I could wear something fairly substantial out-of-doors.
The highlight of this outfit was my beloved denim shirt from J. Crew. This shirt was the subject of one of the first articles I ever wrote for this website, as well as featured in one I wrote two years ago about the best shirts for fall. I always keep it hanging in my closet and was so pleased that the weather was cool enough that I could wear it comfortably.
It always feels a little weird putting on my heavier garments after wearing nothing but madras, seersucker, and linen for months. There was a really satisfying heft to the shirt as I wrapped it around myself. It also has a really nice smell. I know that sounds weird, but this shirt holds onto a comforting combination scent of my body, my deodorant, my closet, and woodsmoke.
I also love how faded the shirt is getting. I can even tell the difference from the pictures I took for the article a few years ago. That’s what’s so lovely about a shirt like this. It’s robust enough that it will endure years of heavy use without faltering and that use will cause the shirt to break in beautifully.
For my pants, I wore my pair of dark wash jeans from Dickie’s. Yes, I realize that I did the whole “double denim” thing and I really don’t care. The only people who care about stupid stuff like that are the internet weirdos who spend way too much time criticizing other people’s clothes on the internet and not enough time out in the real world enjoying their own clothes.
For me, I wanted to wear my jeans and I wanted to wear my denim shirt. I didn’t care that they are both blue denim. As you can see, there is some variation in color between the two, which is fine. Again, no one really cares about stuff like that. I had to run some errands and it was threatening rain so I popped on a shirt and pants that would keep me protected from the chill. They just happen to look similar.
For my footwear, stout leather boots were in order because a storm was approaching.
I also wore my Stetson Roadster and tossed my navy Harrington jacket in the car (which I didn’t actually get a picture of but you can read about it here).
This Stetson has really become my favorite casual hat. It’s usually the hat I wear when I chop wood (along with my Akubra Campdraft) and it’s so worn in from sweat and bug spray that the felt almost feels like clay. A beat up, worn in hat really is a wonderful thing.
I don’t expect the weather to stay this temperate and I’ll probably have to bounce back to regular, calendar-appropriate outfits in the coming weeks. Oh well. This has been a nice reprieve from the stifling summer heat and humidity. The change of seasons is something I could never live without.
Have a wonderful weekend!
