Outfit Of The Week 5/25/25 – 5/31/25

As I promised in last week’s edition of “OOTW”, this week features the outfit I wore over the weekend during a belated Mother’s Day dinner date with my wife (and yes, I still need to clean my bathroom mirror).

We weren’t able to do a proper celebration on actual Mother’s Day, due to some traveling that day, so we resolved to dedicate a day over Memorial Day weekend to it instead, so that my wife wouldn’t miss out.
Our usual process for special nights is to get the kids fed and in bed early so that we can get dressed up and get our own dinner on the table.
For dinner, I chose to wear a suit I hadn’t worn in quite some time. This was actually the first suit I purchased for myself in adulthood. It’s mid-grey (not quite dark enough to be charcoal) and sports pretty middle-of-the-road proportions.

Looking back on it, I am actually pretty shocked at how full-cut this suit is considering I bought it probably fifteen years ago at the height of the “skin-tight suit” craze. I didn’t specifically opt for a classically-cut suit at the time (since I didn’t know anything about menswear then) so I basically just walked into the shop (Jos. A Bank) and said “I need a grey suit for interviews” and this is what they gave me.
I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for this suit, not only because I’ve worn it on countless dates with my wife, but because of how comfortable it is. The jacket has some nice drape. The trousers have a smidge higher rise than what would be considered “mid-rise”. I opted to have one-and-a-half inch cuffs added to the hems of the trousers. A few years later, I had suspender buttons added to the waist.
My tie was a grey, Prince-of-Wales check from Charles Tyrwhitt. This is what is commonly called a “wedding tie”. Sometimes plaid patterns can look a bit informal, but not this one. Usually, I don’t intentionally do the “monochrome” look, but I really like the combination of the mid-grey suit and this particular tie.
My pocket square was a simple, white linen. My socks were black, knee-high socks from Gold Toe. My shoes were black cap-toes from Charles Tyrwhitt. There is actually more break at the hems than what appears in this photo, as my pants got hiked up a little when I bent down to take the picture of my shoes.

Mother’s Day is one of the days of the year that you NEED to get dressed up for! If anyone should see you all gussied up, it’s your wife!
Have a wonderful weekend!
