Pro Marriage Tip of the day… if your wife suggests you spend the evening drinking wine by the fire after a decadent meal that she made, you enthusiastically take her up on it!

I sound like a broken record at this point, but my wife and I do at-home date nights whenever we can. Any remotely celebratory day is cause for getting dressed up and planning a nice, relaxing night where the two of us can connect after a long week.

We do this for all the big days on the calendar, like birthdays, Mother’s/Father’s Day, anniversary, Valentine’s Day, etc. But between my birthday in July and her birthday in December, we don’t have any “celebration days” already built into the calendar.

So, we take matters into our own hands!

The suit I decided to wear for this date was the first suit I ever bought for myself. What’s so funny about this suit was that it was pretty unfashionable when I bought it from Jos. A Bank back in probably 2010 when everything was SLIM.

The suit is somewhat boxy and has a nice amount of drape. The shoulders are strong and structured. The lapels are fairly wide. The trousers have a nice high rise. Even though I knew nothing about menswear at the time, I had the pants hemmed with a full break (and cuffs added), which matched the overall “full cut” of the rest of the suit. The picture below doesn’t really show the break of the trousers because the pants hiked up a little when I bent over to take a picture of my shoes but you can get an idea of the break from the picture in which I am tending to the fire.

One of the reasons I like wearing this suit around the house is because it’s SO comfortable given the fit and proportions I just mentioned.

The color is also very versatile. It’s mid-grey which I have found works fine for buttoned-up occasions like an interview, but is light enough to not look too severe during something like a daytime wedding.

With the suit, I wore a blue-and-white, paisley tie from Charles Tyrwhitt. I usually save this tie for celebratory events because it’s a little iridescent. I love that it ties a really nice, fat knot.

My shirt was a white, French-cuff, spread-collar shirt (also from Charles Tyrwhitt). The cufflinks I wore were silver, mother-of-pearl links that my wife bought me. Pearl was our beloved bulldog’s birth stone, so the cufflinks are a great way to remember her.

When I wear my dark suits with black shoes, I usually wear the black-strapped Bulova watch I wore on my wedding day.

For dinner, my wife made me a steak and some amazing rice balls!

Another incredibly enjoyable date night in the books!
