Outfit Of The Week 8/2/26 – 8/8/26
This week’s edition of “OOTW” really took me by surprise! This week has been crazy busy with work for both my wife and me. We were sitting in the living room after dinner for a brief breather before getting our boys into bed when I went “Oh crap! I haven’t done this week’s ‘OOTW’!”
After a few weeks of jacket-and-tie goodness, I want to shift a bit toward a more casual ensemble.
The outfit you see here is one I wore on a recent evening walk.
Lately, I have been feeling in a bit of a malaise. I have been working out with regularity, but I wasn’t getting out and moving as much as I wanted to. Between gym sessions, I was pretty sedentary and that was starting to get to me.
So, I decided I needed to get up and about more often, hence the new routine of evening walks. I don’t walk very far. Only about a mile and a half. It takes me about 30 minutes since the walk is up and down my very hilly rural road.
Speaking of rural… the other night, I got uncomfortably close to a family of bears! I make it a point to make A LOT more noise on my walks now.
Anyway, since the weather has been extremely rainy lately, my outfit needed to be able to handle a lot of precipitation.
Unfortunately, my Harrington-style jacket from Orvis was not up to the task. I love this jacket, but it’s not great in very heavy rain. My Barbour would have been better, but it was too hot to wear that.
My jacket was thoroughly drenched when I came back inside and didn’t fully dry until mid-way through the next day. It got so water-logged that my t-shirt underneath was soaked. My kingdom for a waxed cotton Harrington!
My footwear consisted of my rubber, fleece-lined Hunter boots.
These boots are excellent and the only reason my socks got wet was because I tucked my pants into my boots before setting off for my walk. If I had worn my pants over my boots, my feet would have been perfectly dry. I have actually logged a lot of rural miles in these boots (not usual for rain boots) and they have lasted beautifully for years.
The best part of my outfit was my headwear, which was my brown Federation IV fedora from Akubra. This hat can take ANYTHING Mother Nature doles out. Even in torrential rain, my head was dry. The hat has enough stiffener to not wilt under a lot of water weight and has a plastic liner in the crown to stop water from seeping through. It’s a formal-leaning hat that can be used for real, heavy work, which is how I usually use it.
These pictures don’t capture how soaked I was because I thankfully snapped them before the skies opened up. I wouldn’t have wanted to take my phone out of my pocket during the downpour anyway.
