Outfit Of The Week 2/1/26 – 2/7/26
You know what really sucks? Having a basement full of human waste!
Yes, that’s what we had to deal with this week. Oh, the fun of home ownership!
A couple months ago, the filter on our septic tank got clogged which caused some back-up in our lines. We got the filter cleaned, but the backed-up water ended up freezing, which caused even MORE back-up. Long story short, we had lots of yucky stuff spewing from our downstairs toilets. We needed to make a flurry of calls to various septic companies in the area to get the issue straightened out.
I also needed to dig a huge hole in our yard! We have a riser on our septic tank, but apparently one riser isn’t enough! We needed a second riser.
Basically, I needed to dig a hole about 3 feet wide and 4 feet deep. Do you know how hard it is to dig a hole of that size when it’s been below zero for weeks? Pretty darn hard! It took me a solid hour! I thought I was going to end up in China before I hit the tank!
What I am trying to say is that this week has been particularly hectic!
This week’s edition of “OOTW” reflects that.
This week’s outfit is all about practicality!
I started with a cotton flannel shirt, which is Lands’ End Flagship Flannel. It’s one that I reviewed here.
Over that I layered the Filson wool overshirt my wife bought me last year. This piece is one of my most worn pieces during the winter. It’s felted, so it’s incredibly thick. I wear it outside as a light jacket or inside as a heavy house shirt when the house is drafty. It’s also one of the essentials in my overnight bag this time of year. I can’t stress enough how useful a stout, wool shirt is if you live in an area that gets cold.
My hat was my beloved wool/cashmere watch hat in Donegal-fleck navy.
Below that were my jeans and logger boots. My boots got pretty trashed while digging the aforementioned hole. I was happy that my boots are proper work boots (and not those silly, fashion-forward, “heritage” boots) and have steel shanks in the soles which means I can kick a shovel without causing discomfort to my feet.
Today I went to the hardware store and bought a big plank of wood to cover the hole until I can get that precious second riser installed.
Ah, the adventures of a home-owning dad!
Oh, thankfully the issue with the septic has been fixed and my wife bleached our entire basement so we are all good!
